Plant the Seed.

Cody’s love of oysters and Rachel’s love of sustainability collided to create Ghost Fleet Oyster Company. A solid foundation for the farm started with learning. Building on their educations, Cody and Rachel learned from and collaborated with local farmers as well as the State of North Carolina to determine location, equipment, and aquaculture methods. North Carolina is an ideal habitat for growing oysters due to it’s clean, warm water and ample space. Ghost Fleet farms are located between North Topsail Island and Hampstead, North Carolina.

So what’s a Ghost Fleet? The NC coast is often referred to as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” as it’s shallow waters, hidden sandbars and narrow inlets have caused many shipwrecks. These shipwrecked ships or “ghost” ships are great habitats for marine life as well as unique place to dive. Oyster farms are also great habitats for marine life. To us, both oysters and ghost ships are quintessential to the North Carolina Coast!

Tend the Crop.

Oysters start out as a seed on the farm - approximately 4 mm each! An oyster takes 9 to 18 months to reach the desired taste and size. In that time, oysters are sorted by size and equipment is cleaned on a daily or weekly basis depending on the season. Oysters grow year round, but especially in the warmer months. Want to see an oyster farm for yourself? Join us on an Oyster Tour! We want nothing more than to teach you how we farm and spread our vision.

Harvest.

Ghost Fleet Oysters taste unique to our local waters. Merroir is a fancy French word for the flavor which is derived from a sense of place. This may sound similar to “terroir” often used when describing wine - the location where the grapes are grown influences the flavor of the wine. While the wild harvest season closes during the summer so oysters can spawn, you can eat farmed oysters year-around! Ghost Fleet aims to provide the freshest oysters driven by our mission - oysters grown with respect and sustainable for the future. Try for yourself!
